December 2011
Between the note in recent issues of Poets and Writers, and the newest versions of the Directories, our inbox is full of submissions. Thank you, and please keep them coming! We'd like to get Volume II printed sometime in 2012. We dream of a regular schedule of print publication. Meanwhile, we are very pleased to update the online version of Volume II, with recent contributions from two poets, Doug Bolling and Bruce McCrae.
We think Volume I would make a great holiday gift--it's recycled paper, soy ink and is full of thoughtful poetry. Just click on the "order" tab, above.
As the skies clear in Autumn and Winter, don't forget to look up; there are always a few poems in the thin air of a cold twilight.
July 2011
Welcome to our newest poet, Kristin Camitta Zimet. We got rather behind in our submission reviews this Spring, and are still catching up, but we have not been idle. We've been sending Volume I out to libraries, we've been writing ourselves, and our paying jobs have kept us very busy. We are thrilled to be receiving fine submissions, and our meetings to discuss them are one of the most rewarding things we do. Keep the poems coming! Submissions have picked up, but the more we get, the more likely it is that we can add to Volume II, and get it printed within the year. As you know, we post our accepted poems on this web site, and when we have enough, we print. It took several years before Volume I was full; we are hoping for a speedier printing of Volume II. If you'd like a printed copy of Volume I, please click on the Order tab, above.
It may interest our readers that Sally's poem "Earthshine", the last lines of which spawned the name of this journal, recently appeared in the journal Snowy Egret.
March 2011
First, thank you for your orders and for the many kind comments about the first printed Volume of Earthshine. We are very proud of it, and of the wonderful poetry it contains. We have been filling orders and sending out copies for reviews, and we hope the journal will become more well-known. If you have suggestions for potential reviewers, please drop us a line, and we will send out copies to them. We hope to satisfy the wishes for "many more to come". We believe that the combination of an online journal and a printed version provides something for everyone--the easy accessibility to fine poetry, but the ability to hold it in one's hands, and keep it by the bedside if one so wishes.
Finally, Volume II has begun, as you see. We didn't wait for ten poems, because we had seven just waiting to be read, and we didn't want them to be inside a dark folder any longer. We are pleased to present these fine works as the kick-off of Volume II, and we hope you enjoy them. We look forward to your poetry submissions as we add to the number. Our page banner will stay the same, but we are seeking new cover art for this volume--please read our submission guidelines, and inquire before sending art.

We'd like to thank you for your patience and continued good wishes for the journal. Volume 1 is being compiled for printing, though we will add poems to it until Dec 31, should there be accepted ones in the group of submissions which we are now reviewing. We hope you enjoy our newest poetry by Daniel J. Langton. We'd also like to remind you that we are listed in Duotrope (http://www.duotrope.com/index.aspx), and it is useful to report your submission responses there, so that others can know your experience, with Earthshine, and other journals. There is a link at the bottom of our submissions page.
Would the teacher of the students in Corona, California please contact us by email?

Good news: Earthshine Volume I is at the printer and we will be shipping out starting December 10. You may order copies by mail or from this web site by clicking on the "Order" tab, above.
Volume II is building, and when we have accepted at least 10 poems for it, we will put it up, and continue to build until it is full. We welcome your submissions, and hope you will help us to spread the word about the debut of the print version of what has received many compliments as an online journal. As always we appreciate your support and patience, and we are vastly proud of Volume I, and excited about what we have so far received for Volume II.
Yes, we have set up a FaceBook page. The world will continue to turn if you do not visit it.

We hope you like the new additions: Michael McManus, Rupert Fike, and the newest, Judith Ann Levison. We are getting close to printing now (only two years after we thought we would be able to). The volume will be thin--but thick enough to be perfect-bound, and we are very excited. We don't have a timetable yet, but Volume I will close soon. Last call for Volume I. We'll keep you posted. Thanks for your patience!

We hope you like our newest poems from Louis Gallo and Bruce Lader. We got behind in submission responses because of busy times, but we are now caught up again. We really do like to respond within a month, and thank for your patience those of you who waited longer than expected. Thanks also to those who tell us where they heard about us. Its very useful for us to know which directories send the most submissions our way. NewPages, Duotrope, and Poets' Market seem to be the top three.

It appears that many poets made it a New Year's resolution to submit their poems, and we are glad they did. Our new additions from William Doreski, Ed Higgins, Fredrick Zydek and Russell Brickey have bolstered our hopes that we will be able to print before we get too much older. We hope you enjoy these as much as we did. As always, thank you for your kind compliments and support.

As you can see, although we continue to receive a steady flow of submissions, we have not accepted any poems recently. All we can say is we are sorry the journal isn't full yet; without compromising the literary quality, we can't fill it any faster. We can live with it if you can. We appreciate the compliments we have received thus far, and will keep you posted.
The Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, which was held at the end of September at Waterloo Village, near Stanhope, NJ. was deeply energizing. Not the least of joyful discoveries was this: that nearly 20,000 people would be willing to slog around in the rain to hear poetry readings and attend poetry workshops. You can share, at least somewhat, in this experience by visiting YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/grdodge. Unfortunately, the reading by Coral Bracho of her poem, "Give Me Earth, Your Night" and the reading of the translation to English, by Forrest Gander, is not among the videos. But it is from her book Firefly Under the Tongue. This alone was worth the damp, wet-footed attendance--and there was much other inspiration to be found. There was promise of the entire festival eventually being available on-line.

A new poem has been added, and two more are coming soon; we hope you enjoy them. We're pleased to be receiving more frequent submissions, now that the 2009 Poet's Market has come out--though interestingly, these latest additions were not generated that way. We suppose that we should have listed Earthshine in Poet's Market last year, but we were afraid to. Our mistake. We will also tweak this listing for next year, as we are not sure how we got listed under the "Psychic and Occult" heading (everything else was right, however). Sally and her husband Rich will be attending the Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival (http://www.dodgepoetry.org/) this year, our first time at this event, and we hope to learn a great deal, hear many of our favorite poets, and meet new ones. We'll let you know how it goes. We (Julie and Sally) will do our best to get the first printed volume out sometime this Fall. We're sorry its taking so long--but we think the poems in it will be worth waiting for. Even if it's thin, we don't want to cross into another year.

Welcome to our newest poet, Anne Pierson Wiese.
June 5, 2008
We're pleased to have added a new poem and poet to our content, and we hope you enjoy it. And we'd like to call your attention to a web site which interested us: http://www.dzancbooks.org, a non-profit which supports literary journals, among other things. They have added Earthshine to their directory, Best of the Web 2008, although the timing did not allow any of our poems to be listed.

We continue to receive a slow but steady stream of submissions, and are amazed at the variety and thoughtfulness of the poets who write to us. Earthshine was recently reviewed at NewPages.com, and the review features three of our poets: Mario Susko, Marin Jervis and Don Thompson. If you'd like to read the review, go to www.newpages.com/mag. If that doesn't work, just go to www.newpages.com and click on reviews. We hope that listing our journal in places like NewPages will increase the rate of submissions, and thereby fill up the journal more quickly (of course one does not necessarily lead to the other). Check back; poem number 12 will be uploaded soon. Thank you for your continued interest and comments about Earthshine.

Yes, we are still here. We have been busy--our mother died, and we both have demanding other work. But Earthshine is high priority and we have easily stayed on top of our submissions. We are frankly disappointed that we are not getting more, because, since we choose carefully, we have not accepted any for awhile. We are getting about 10/week, and that is not enough. Of course, our last acceptance, "Oaks", dropped into a vacuum--so one is enough, if it rocks our world. We are proud of those which we have posted and are grateful to our poets. So if we don't update for a month or two, it does not mean our vigilance has ebbed--it means we have nothing to say. Well, we actually always have something to say, but it means that we will not bore you with unnecessary filler. We are impatient to add to the journal, and to reach the point where we can print--but not impatient enough to change the way we look at our submissions. It is a pleasure to receive them, and an absolute delight to accept them.
Sally just finished reading (for now) her favorite Christmas presents:
books of poetry by Kay Ryan and by Linda Pastan. In Linda Pastan's book is her reflection on whether its worth it to bother writing poetry after reading Robert Frost-which is the way Sally felt, after reading Linda Pastan's poems. There's a message in that.
Thanks for your continued interest in Earthshine.

As you can see, we have added an eleventh poem. Please check back as the journal builds to enjoy the newest works, and please let us know what you think. Many thanks to those who have commented on the web site and journal. We have received many compliments, and no complaints, yet. Many thanks also to Webstudio247 for being there 24/7.
December 20, 2007
Thanks for your patience; we hope you'll find it worth the wait.
Comments and suggestions are very welcome. May the New Year be filled with poetry and reason; may you find a place of peace in it.
December 5, 2007
Coming very soon: our first 10 poems. We are very pleased and excited about the journal debut, and are very fond of the poems that will be featured. Shows how much we know about poetry journals, though--the jump in submissions we expected did not materialize, and we have started to use other avenues to get the word out that we exist. We are still receiving a small number of submissions, which keeps us hopeful. Check back soon.

August 23, 2007
Thanks to those of you who have communicated with us, submitted poems and listed us on your web sites and blogs. We appreciate your interest. If you are aware of a good literary listing that you think we should join, please let us know. If you have comments about the web site, suggestions or questions, you may email earthshine@ruminations.us. Poetry inquiries and submissions should still be sent to poetry@ruminations.us.
After the first big bump and the smaller afterbumps, submissions have slowed. Its like magic: we won't get but a few submissions for a week or two, and then we'll wake up to a whole slew for a few days. We assume this means another web site picked us up, but we rarely find out. Apparently we are spidering around the world, which is really fun.
But we don't have 10 poems yet. We now have 7. That's OK, we are patient, though we are eager to publish the excellent poems we have accepted. But we want them to be in good company. We await the upcoming Directory (available mid-Sept, www.dustbooks.com) to increase the number of submissions; if that does not produce enough, we will advertise in appropriate places. Judging from the number of submissions generated just from the newsletter, we expect the Directory listing will be more than adequate. We still hope to post our first on-line poems by late September/early October, and to have a full journal by November, to be made available in printed form.
July 1, 2007
Preparations are underway to begin posting the journal, as perhaps you can see from the changes in the web site (we are very grateful to our webmaster). We are happy to have accepted six poems so far; we are enjoying reading your submissions of poetry. Several on-line listers have included us in their directories of publications, and we have received several waves of submissions of different types, from all over the world. We’ve learned a lot about what makes things easier for editors, too, and we’re glad we have had time to tweak our system. Please do read the submission guidelines, it is helpful to us if they are followed. Our turn-around time for responses is running anywhere from a week to a month. For those of you who like statistics (we do) we calculate that we have accepted 3% of the poems submitted. We question the usefulness of this information, however, since what matters is the quality of submissions received. But we thought you’d like to know.

Thank you for your positive response to the creation of Earthshine. Since the Small Press Review was published in April, we have received a steady trickle of submissions. We are pleased with the thoughtful poems we have received so far. We are picky, however, and have not chosen many yet. Our plan is that once we have at least ten poems, we will then upload them and build the journal on-line until we have enough for a printed volume. We're hoping to be able to do this around November 2007, but time will tell. We'll try to post updates, so check back.
